Viking Spoons New Salmonid Secret Weapon
Brainerd, Minn. -- When Original Viking Spoons were introduced in North America last year, a whole new generation was exposed to a lure that had proven itself for over 50 years in Scandinavia. And soon enough, Vikings were conquering fish from the balmy Gulf of Mexico to the frozen landscape of Northwest Ontario.
On the Great Lakes, Lindy guides have discovered that the slender Viking casts farther by weight than other spoons. "It casts like a missile!" says Michigan fishing guide Russ Madden.
Fellow Lindy guide Jon Ray (pictured) says the Viking has proven deadly for trout and salmon in a variety of situations, from drifting Michigan's majestic Manistee River to surf casting and pier fishing.
Madden and Ray note the spoon's versatility, which allows casting and vertical jigging presentations. Plus, you have the option of using different weights at the same spoon length. "This allows you to vary retrieval rates and targeted depths," says Madden. The Viking's heavier weights are ideal for deep water casting and pier fishing, while the same lengths in lighter weights are ideal for skinny water. The slender design is also great or vertical jigging; tailor spoon length based on time of year, forage size and the fish's activity level.
The Viking's six new glow colors are also a huge factor, Madden adds. Click here to see all the exciting options.
