Fishing rods can be both a blessing and a curse. They’re your best friend when making accurate casts, detecting light bites and battling big fish. But when lines cross and hooks tangle, unruly rods test your patience and make you a less efficient angler.

Much of the mayhem comes from rods at rest, especially when they’re bouncing around during transport. But there are simple steps you can take to keep rigged rods tangle-free and ready to fish.

Whether you’re dealing with open-water or ice fishing rods, one of the simplest things you can do to banish bedlam is slip a protective lure wrap or cover over spoons, crankbaits, jigs and other lures tied to the end of your line.

There are a number of choices on the market. Or you can make your own. Lindy Lure Wraps are a perfect example of the commercial options. Made of durable, long-lasting material that stands up to the sharpest hooks, they feature sure-gripping, full-length Velcro straps to keep lures on lockdown, even in rough conditions and during high-speed travel.

To maximize a wrap’s effectiveness, choose a size that matches the lure it will cover. Lindy offers three options, sized to secure a broad spectrum of baits from muskie lures to ice fishing tackle. The smallest is 4.5 inches long by 2.5 inches wide, while the medium version is 6.75 X 4.3 inches and the largest stretches a full 9.8 X 5.2 inches.

Putting any of the three sizes into play is as simple as slipping it around the chosen lure and pressing the Velcro closures together. The wrap does the rest, holding the bait fast until you’re ready to deploy it.
