Use the heaviest jig you can get away with. Most talk in fishing circles these days is to use the lightest jig possible - which does have its merits - A lighter jig is easier for the fish to inhale, and also snags a little less. But I like using a heavier jig for the following reasons.
- It provides more thump and a bigger profile - making it more noticeable and attractive to the fish.
- A heavier jig fishes faster or an angler is more inclined to work a heavier jig more aggressively - invariably causing more strikes
- Most species relate to the bottom and a heavier jig will be near the bottom more often than a lighter jig, especially in rivers or current.
- You can cast it farther - so if you're in a boat or from shore - you'll cover more water.
- You have more control of a heavier jig in windy conditions - allowing for better sensitivity and more hook-ups.
- These are just a few of the reasons to use the heaviest jig you can get away with. Good luck!
